Products - Hermetic Seals
The Tantalum Products Group manufactures
hermetically sealed Tantalum
capacitor end seals including Tantalum Shell and Tantalum Tube
or Pin.
These matched seals utilize glass materials with similar
coefficients of expansion. This insures that both materials will
cool and shrink at the same rate, preventing glass cracking or
metal failure. When heated and cooled, the glass melts and creates a strong
molecular bond with the oxides of the surface metal.

Another type of hermetic seal is a
Compression Seal in which the casing metal has a higher coefficient of expansion than the glass.
During manufacturing, the metal expands more rapidly
than the melting glass. When the temperature begins to decrease,
the metal contracts more rapidly than the cooling glass which
puts
the glass under compression. This creates a strong, reliable
part that is not dependant upon a molecular bond with oxide.
